Homestead, Florida
Incorporated in 1913, Homestead is the second oldest city in Miami-Dade County (Miami is the oldest). Just 35 miles southwest of downtown Miami and 25 miles northwest of Key Largo, Homestead is bordered by Biscayne National Park to the East and Everglades National Park to the West.
The name Homestead actually dates back to when the “Florida East Coast Railway” extension to Key West was being built. The rail line was passing through an area opened up for “homesteading” and the railroad workers’ camp at the end of the line did not have a dedicated name. So construction materials and supplies for the workers were consigned to "Homestead Country", which was shortened to "Homestead" by the engineers who later mapped the area.
Prospective residents of the Homestead area will find a community that is building upon its rich history and positioning itself for a bright future. True to its name, Homestead has a “hometown” feel born from a sense of neighborly respect and residents that take pride in keeping the area’s past alive through dedicated preservation and historical programs.
Industries like agriculture and tourism provide residents diverse employment opportunities while a pleasant “tropical savanna” climate, proximity to scenic and historic wildlife areas, the Atlantic ocean and dozens of recreational opportunities make it a desirable place to live, work and raise a family. Residents are proud of our community’s unique "small-town" feel, but brag about the fact that the area still provides the urban amenities associated with being just 30 minutes from downtown Miami.
Homestead made national headlines in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida, but in the last decade, the city has experienced a building and housing boom due to the residents’ sense of resiliency and determination to rebuild, along with a scarcity of land suited for development in Miami-Dade county. Homestead is back and better than ever!
Prospective residents interested in raising a family will be interested to note that Homestead lies within the Miami-Dade County public school system, which had 8 schools ranked in a recent U.S. News and World Report list of "America's 100 Best High Schools".
