Redland, Florida
Long a source of amazement to agriculturalists, botanists, and naturalists around the world, Redland, FL is an amazing piece of the greater Miami landscape.
Redland (also referred to as “The Redlands”) is an agricultural community nestled about 20 miles southwest of Downtown Miami. Farms, original clapboard homes from early settlers, “Pick Your Own” fruit and vegetable fields and coral rock walls make up the area’s unique landscape.
Redland was named for the red clay that dominates the area, and the entire area is nourished with pure water from the Biscayne Aquifer. An interesting note about the area’s rich agriculture-based history is that pioneer homesteaders in the early 1900’s developed a way of working the difficult soil, called “scarifying” or “plow-breaking”. This revolutionary method of agriculture allowed the land around Redland to develop into the "Winter greenery basket of America" and the "Garden capital of the world".
In recent years, Redland has earned the nick name “The New Hamptons", since there are many people from the northern states buying property and moving into the area. Many homes built in the area must be on a minimum of 5 acres of land (a law put into place to slow development). Residents will tell you that so far, the law has worked perfectly and deserves credit for preserving the natural and open feel of the area. Peacocks and dozens of other species of birds are abundant in Redland, living freely among the area’s many groves, and Redland has been designated a wild bird sanctuary.
It’s close proximity to the Florida Turnpike and US-1 make Redland a conveniently located area for residents that work in Miami or who want to take advantage of the big city’s entertainment and recreational options while still living in a gorgeous rural area. Residents have the best of both worlds- lying just 30 minutes south of the Miami International Airport, Redland is bordered by the sprawling Everglades to west, Key Biscayne National Park on the East, and the famous Florida Keys to the South.
Redland residents are proud of their community and have taken many steps to preserve old historical buildings while still developing new businesses, retail shops and restaurants in it’s charming historic district.
